ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAMME

THE CITY OF EDINBURGH COUNCIL

 MED47315: DISCOVER: SMALL MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

 FRIDAYS: 2.00PM TO 4.00PM – 8 WEEK COURSE

 STARTS FRIDAY 25 JANUARY 2013

 First class at the Museum of Edinburgh, Huntly House, 142 – 146 Canongate, Edinburgh.

Come and explore the social, political, literary and artistic histories of the City of Edinburgh’s Museums and Galleries.

This course aims to take a closer look at Edinburgh’s past through the city’s diverse museum and gallery collections.  Whilst the main theme of the course is social history, each week will explore different issues such as labour and the workplace, childhood and education, political campaigning and how writers and artists have contributed to the development of Edinburgh’s history and heritage.

You will have the opportunity to:

– explore the City of Edinburgh Museums’ displays and collections;

– investigate how Museum collections document and interpret social and political histories;

– examine and analyse how artefacts ‘tell the history’ of past lives and events;

– reflect on and contribute personal histories which are relevant to discussions and debate of the past.

Students will visit different locations over the eight weeks and will be encouraged to discuss, question and examine how their own lives have contributed to Edinburgh’s ‘hidden history’.

If you would like to enrol on this course, please telephone the Adult Education Programme on (0131) 556 7978, or call in at our office:

About edinburghmuseumsoutreach

I'm the Outreach & Access Manager at Edinburgh Museums & Galleries (the museums service of the City of Edinburgh Council). I take the museums out to community groups and schools. I really enjoy meeting lots of people of different ages and backgrounds and helping them connect with our collections. I love showing people some of the amazing objects that we hold and I like helping them to remember the past or to create something amazing.
